Educational Discussion: Realities of Pilipino Migration

Sulong UBC Educational Discussion Series: Know Your History, Honour Your Legacy

Join us in continuing our dive into Filipino history! Are you curious about what your parents or family members experienced back home? Have you always wondered about your heritage, but didn’t know who to ask about things like martial law, precolonial history, or the so-called “war on drugs”? Then join Sulong UBC for our series of educational discussions that will allow us to learn and understand the historical conditions that continue to impact the present-day Philippines, and what we can do about it from the diaspora. Email sulong.ubc@gmail.com to confirm your attendance today.

Youth and students have always played an important and decisive role in our advancing patriotic and progressive mass movements in the Philippines, from the days of the Katipunan, to the Diliman Commune and the First Quarter Storm during the Marcos era, to the national democratic struggle under the Duterte regime. In response to escalating attacks on human rights and freedoms, we are well-placed to level informed and incisive critiques of the Philippine political situation. Join Sulong UBC to learn more about how you can make an impact!

This event takes place on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) people. As diasporic people whose migration stories are rooted in colonization and imperialism, we aim to act in solidarity with the Indigenous peoples here, back home, and around the world in their struggles to defend their land, rights, and sovereignty. Filipino migration and settlement in these lands is driven by poverty and lack of opportunity; by addressing the root causes of the Philippines’ present-day situation and fighting for peace, justice, and the ability to make our livelihoods in our motherland, we can make a contribution to stopping the settlement of Indigenous lands.

ABOUT US: Sulong UBC is a group for Filipinx undergraduate and graduate students and school-aged youth to explore what it means to be Filipinx on our campuses, in our communities, and in our personal lives. We come together to educate ourselves, discuss historical and contemporary issues back home and in the diaspora, and work to create a fun, supportive space for Filipinx youth and students. We’ve hosted film screenings, social events, and learning modules among Filipinx/Filipinx-Canadian students and we can’t wait to do more! Let’s advance our vision for a more engaged Filipinx youth and student sector, TOGETHER!
